About Cleanses
Cleanses became popular when Stanley Burroughs published his book The Master Cleanser in 1976. Since that time there have been many versions of the cleanse, which is essentially a special liquid diet intended for a distinct period of time. Cleanses have become popular again as more Hollywood celebrities take the plunge, despite the fact that cleanses continue to be controversial. While there are many different kinds of cleanses with different goals, they share similar pros and cons.

The Pros
Cleansing experts assert that cleanses, whether they are dietary cleanses or cleanses using supplements, have many benefits. Some of these benefits include:
  • Quick weight loss ranging from 10 to 50 lbs. in 10 days or more.
  • Elimination of your body's toxins.
  • Identification of food allergies when resuming normal diet.
  • Greater ability to build healthy eating habits after the cleanse.

The Cons
According to some medical professionals, there is no need for extreme cleansing diets because the human body already has an efficient system for toxin removal: the digestive process, which includes help from the liver and kidneys. Some experts in the medical community are concerned about the following risks:

  • Temporary, not permanent, weight loss with increased difficulty losing weight in the future due to the diet's effect on your metabolism.
  • Unhealthy ramifications of starving your body of proteins and other essential nutrients.
  • Cleansing reactions such as: indigestion, constipation, headaches, nausea, fatigue, bloated feeling, dehydration, and frequent diarrhea.
  • Flushing out your body's nutrients at the same time you are flushing out toxins.
  • Weakening of your body's immune system and muscles that can lead to cardiovascular problems.
  • Increased risks with longer and repeated cleanses.
  • No medical evidence proving these benefits exist.
  • Particularly risky for some groups of people such as children, teenagers, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, diabetics, seniors and people chronic conditions such as heart disease.

Before changing your diet, please make sure you consult a medical professional. You may want to consider moderation with regard to improving your diet. Lemon Thyme ChickenRecipe: Lemon Thyme Chicken

 
Savor the remaining warm days with a new barbecue
recipe. I love this chopped over fresh fennel!

Ingredients
    4 six-ounce boneless, skinless chicken breasts
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    1 tablespoon lemon juice
    1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
    2 cloves garlic minced

Preparation
1.    Mix oil, lemon juice, thyme and garlic.
2.    Place chicken in shallow baking dish and
       cover with mixture. Let sit in refrigerator
       for 30 minutes.
3.    Preheat grill.
4.    Place chicken on grill and cook until done. About 12-14 minutes, turning half way through
       cooking time. Chicken breasts should be tender and juices clear.
