Greetings!
Hi and welcome to our very first newsletter!
Many of you have been with me for the last 8
years and watched a small boutique, healthful,
home-food delivery service become well, a
success at just that. I owe that to each and
every one of my faithful members. It has been a
dream to help us all become, and more
importantly stay, healthy! Thank you.
In this issue we are featuring some very real
dangers of sugar in our nutrition section. And
we have a fantastic offer for you from a
cutting-edge Fairfield County personal training
facility. Also try out one of my favorite
recipes, Mediterranean Chickpea Salad.
Happy Eating!

Nutrition: You and The
Serious Sins of Sugar
|
|
Do you know how much refined sugar you
eat regularly?
According to statistics, the average person eats
over 10 pounds of sugar each month, which is nearly
4 ½ cups of sugar per week. The problem is that
sugar is 99.5 percent pure calories - no vitamins,
no minerals, no fiber, no fats, no enzymes and no
proteins, just carbohydrates.
Sugar can also wreak havoc with your body and lead
to
diseases
such as osteoporosis, dental disease, diabetes,
hypoglycemia, gallstones, neurological problems,
cancer, heart disease, obesity, and aging. Some
nutritionists even equate sugar to harmful drugs
based on the damage it causes and its addictive
nature.
How does sugar hurt you? Here are just a few
examples of what happens when you consume sugar:
- Your body uses calcium to combat the effects
of sugar depleting the calcium in your bones and
causing
osteoporosis.
- Your pancreas creates insulin to
counterbalance sugar and can weaken from overuse
leading to
diabetes.
- Sugar disrupts the balance of minerals
leading to
gallstones.
- Even
short-term memory and numerical abilities
can be compromised. Sugar decreases the
production of vitamin B complex, which is a
vital nutrient for healthy brain function.
You will be surprised to find out where sugar is:
Even some salt has sugar. Rest assured that 5
Squares does not use refined sugars in any meal
plans.
Consider eliminating sugar from your diet for a few
weeks. You may suffer from some withdrawal symptoms,
but you will have more energy and actually feel
better. Try it. You will be amazed!
